Abstract:
This study explores the possibility of time management mediating the effect of social media usage on grade 10 students’ math performance in selected secondary schools in Consolacion, Cebu, Philippines. Using a descriptive correlational research design, 396 students were surveyed through simple random sampling. The data underwent statistical analysis such as frequency count, percentage, weighted mean, standard deviation, Pearson’s r, and multiple regression analysis. Findings revealed that students moderately engage in social media, showing moderate passive use and low active use. Respondents demonstrated good overall time management skills; good skills in time planning, good time attitude, and in time consumers. Social media usage and math performance show a significant moderate negative correlation, while time management had a significant moderate positive correlation with math performance. A significantly negligible negative correlation was also found between social media usage and time management. Time management was found to partially mediate the effect of social media, weakening its negative impact on students’ math performance. Thus, it is recommended for school and teachers to enhance time management skills of students to reduce the negative impact of social media on their academic performance.
