Innovative Approach to Guided Inquiry in Geometric Activities Related to the Representation of Space in Secondary Mathematics Education

Abstract:

 

The following paper presents an innovative methodology developed in the context of teaching stereometry in secondary school. The main objective of the survey was to examine the relationship between pupils' geometric and spatial skills, and their ability to solve geometric problems. The survey sample comprised 544 pupils from ten Slovakian schools, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive approach to teaching spatial skills to enhance pupils' geometric preparedness. The survey employs its own stereometrical test and indicates that effective problem-solving in this area hinges on a thorough grasp of spatial geometry. Qualitative and quantitative analysis were done in the survey evaluation. Based on the survey results, a methodology was proposed and incorporated into the teaching process. Feedback from mathematics teachers was also recorded. Teachers who used this methodology in their lessons provided their opinions on it, including recommendations for improvement.
