Abstract:

ChatGPT is a cutting-edge product developed by OpenAI and its emergence has impacted various fields, including education. Moreover, the burgeoning exploitation of ChatGPT attracts numerous scholars and researchers to examine its role in educational settings. While the novel tool promises to complement the conventional teaching method and facilitate individualized learning, plenty of its challenges and limitations have been addressed. Hence, this paper aims to examine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of adopting ChatGPT in English language learning from the voices of 5 EFL (English as a Foreign Language) English teachers and 5 ELF undergraduate students at a private university in Vietnam. Data were collected from individual interviews and then analyzed by the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) method. In addition, ChatGPT’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in learning English will be discovered via teachers' and students’ perceptions. Findings also revealed some mismatches among their views. Furthermore, the findings of the present paper add a dimensional view of the adoption of the potential application in learning English through the lens of users to the existing literature on ChatGPT.

Keywords – ChatGPT, teachers’ perceptions, students’ perceptions, English language learning, higher education.
