The Dual Challenge of Work and Study: Identifying Distinct Dropout Profiles Among Part-Time Students in Business

Abstract:
This study examines dropout patterns among working students at a Czech private business university (n=2,034, 2017–2023), distinguishing employment-related from financial withdrawal factors. Employment factors affected twice as many students as financial pressures (65% vs. 32%), with time constraints (30%) and post-employment motivation loss (25–30%) as primary drivers. Financial barriers manifested mainly through family obligations (15–18%) rather than tuition costs. A negative correlation between time constraints and motivation loss (ρ = −.400) indicates independent mechanisms. Three distinct student profiles emerged, each requiring tailored interventions. Patterns remained stable across seven years, suggesting structural features of working populations rather than institutional deficiencies, and challenging assumptions about retention without fundamental program restructuring.
