Exploring Problem-Solving Skills and Scientific Attitudes in Field Botany: Cibodas Botanical Garden Study

Abstract:
Problem-solving skills are an essential competency for addressing global challenges. However, educators have not fully understood the most effective methods for fostering problem-solving skills in students. The purpose of this study is to examine the problem-solving abilities and scientific attitudes of students taking the Phanerogams Botany field course at the Cibodas Botanical Garden in Indonesia. This research was conducted using a descriptive method on 40 third-semester students from the Biology Education Study Program at a private university in Bandung. Data were collected through the use of learning implementation observation sheets, student worksheets, and an attitude scale questionnaire (numerical rating scale). The problem-solving ability instrument, which was developed for the purposes of this study, consisted of five questions. The scientific attitude instrument, which was also developed for this study, consisted of four indicators, which were translated into 20 questions. The findings indicate that the Phanerogamae Botany field course has a beneficial effect on students problem-solving abilities, encompassing the identification stage and the evaluation of strategies employed. Furthermore, this field study plays a significant role in fostering students’ scientific attitudes, including curiosity, honesty, open-mindedness, and the capacity to collaborate effectively.
