Abstract:

The article addresses the often-overlooked challenges of construction preparation within the context of digital building models. It highlights the risks associated with hastily embracing digitization, which may automate tasks traditionally handled during preparation but cannot replace thorough and thoughtful planning. While digital models transform processes and enable advanced control, the paper emphasizes the need to integrate preparation seamlessly into these models to avoid potential shortcomings. The study revisits traditional construction preparation, where pre-production, production, and operational stages logically followed one another. It compares this with modern practices, where companies leverage digital models to enhance construction processes, moving digitization directly to the construction site. In doing so, the article critically examines broader visions of digitization, cautioning against solutions developed solely by programmers lacking practical insight, as such approaches may overlook real-world challenges and practical applications. As a practical demonstration, the paper presents a case study on the Building Data Warehouse (BDW) project, an advanced system for digital process control in construction. This example showcases both the benefits and obstacles encountered when implementing innovative digital solutions, stressing the importance of balancing technological advancement with real-world usability and preparedness.
