Abstract:

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are key contributors to economic growth and employment creation in developing countries. Entrepreneurial competencies are essential for business success, however, the specific competencies that contribute to high-performing MSMEs vary in different countries. This study aims to investigate the entrepreneurial competencies of successful MSME entrepreneurs. Using a questionnaire-based survey of a sample of 340 successful MSME entrepreneurs in Thailand, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was conducted to identify clusters of entrepreneurial competencies. The findings indicate eight essential clusters of competencies for successful entrepreneurs: opportunity, relationship, commitment and analytical, learning and innovation, operational, human, strategic, and personal strength competencies. Despite the smaller number of clusters, the MSME entrepreneurial competencies scale shows strong alignment with the original entrepreneurial competencies scale. MSME entrepreneurs can use this scale to self-assess their competencies. Organizations and government agencies can utilize it to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of MSME entrepreneurs, facilitating the development of strategies and supports to improve the growth and success of business.
