Abstract:

Conventional laboratories requiring direct interaction with physical equipment are commonly used in Internet of Things (IoT) education. However, such laboratories have limitations, such as the lack of opportunities for students to perform their own experiments. Virtual laboratories, such as Wokwi, address these issues by providing interactive environments for designing and executing simulated experiments. This research investigates students’ perception of adopting the Wokwi virtual laboratory on an IoT course. Using descriptive qualitative methodology, the study gathered data from 20 Indonesian university students enrolled in an IoT course through questionnaires and interviews. The findings suggest that virtual laboratories offer several advantages, including cost and risk reduction; increased student engagement and motivation; and improved educational quality. Additionally, virtual laboratories can facilitate more personalised learning experiences and accommodate different learning speeds. However, challenges remain, such as the limited range of components available; issues stemming from insufficient knowledge; problems related to mobile phone usage; and lack of accessibility for visually impaired students. These challenges highlight the need for ongoing development and support to maximise the use of virtual laboratories in IoT education.
