Analysis of the Influence of Skills Training on Ships Leadership with an Understanding of the International Safety Management (ISM) Code as a Mediation Variable

Abstract:
Ensuring safety on board is of utmost importance, as it plays a critical role in protecting the lives of all passengers and crew members, maintaining operational efficiency, and preventing accidents or emergencies at sea. Skills training needs to be carried out to obtain safety provisions on board. There is a standard for ensuring safety and preventing pollution of ships called international safety management code (ISM code). Training skills and understanding of the ISM code are important to ensure effective implementation and compliance with these safety standards. The purpose of the research is to observe whether skills training and understanding of the ISM code affect the way of leadership on the ship. How do the skills training and understanding of the ISM code implemented by leaders on board influence their effectiveness, to see if the understanding of the ISM code can mediate leadership on board and then provide solutions and improvements so that leaders on board implement a safety culture. This study uses a quantitative method, the researcher conducted research at the merchant marine polytechnic of semarang on students of the nautical and engineering study program in semesters 7 and 8 due to prior onboard practice, possession of a skill certificate, and a thorough understanding of the ISM code, effective implementation is ensured. The researcher used the SmartPLS 3.0 application with an understanding of the ISM code as a mediating variable. The study result shows that skills training has a positive and significant influence on leadership. Furthermore, a deep understanding of the ISM code strengthens the relationship between skills training and leadership. The ISM code is important in ensuring that the skills acquired through training can be applied effectively in onboard leadership.
